Introduction to advocacy

Introduction to advocacy is a course presenting the basic concepts and principles of policy advocacy, focusing on the strategic approach and on the tools that are used when implementing advocacy actions.

The course helps to understand what policy advocacy is, how it works, what is its potential and why civil society organisations should/could be interested in engaging in advocacy activities.

The course is structured in 4 modules.

Gerasimos Kouvaras has over 20 years of engagement as executive director, instructor, advisor and volunteer in and for civil society sector at national and international level. Since 2007, he is the General Director of ActionAid Hellas, Before joining ActionAid, among others, he has served Amnesty International as Director for Greece and the Greek Ministry of Education as Special Advisor on Volunteering and Youth Sector. He is a PhD in Management candidate at Cass Business School of City University of London and his other academic background includes a MBA from Nottingham Trent University, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki. As an instructor, he has given several lectures and workshops in Greece and abroad within his areas of expertise to audiences including university post-graduate students, UN staff, public officials, NGO senior staff and youth leaders, and has published diverse educational materials for Civil Society organisations on advocacy and on volunteer management.

Marina Sarli, currently Programs Lead & EU Cluster Coordinator at Impact Hub, has started her professional path as a professional in the CSOs sector in2001 . She was one of the young volunteer joining action of the so called pilot Youth Programs in the late 90s. Since then, she has been working as project manager and general director for Youth Associations and Development organisations. In 2002 she has founded Fair Trade Hellas. She has been active in consultancy, advocacy and governance level into the European Development Cooperation Sector (she just finished her second mandate for international board of Concord). Since 2009 she works as a freelance fundraiser, trainer, and consultant for CSOs. In 2016 she joined Impact Hub as EU Cluster Coordinator. Last but not least, since 2018 she is co-ordinating the Advocacy & Policy Pillar of the EU funded project Snapshots from the borders.

Introduction to advocacy is a self-learning online course. Every step of the course (from presentation of the contents to evaluation) will take place exclusively on the e-learning platform. At every step, specific information and directions will be available

The course is structured in 4 consecutive MODULES. Every module contains:



  • a reading document with SLIDES to go along the videolessons

  • a selection of READING MATERIALS and/or other VIDEOS/WEBSITES

Subsequent modules will become available only once all the activities of the previous have been completed.

Once all 4 modules are completed, it will be possible to access to the FINAL COURSE TEST which will evaluate the acquired knowledge To pass the test a score of at least 6/10 will be required. Once the EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE is also completed, you will be able to obtain the ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE of the course.

Please note that all the course materials (videolessons, reading material, quizzes etc) are in English.

Enrolment and duration of the course

It is possible to start the course at any moment within one of the three annual windows.

- First window 1 October 2019 - 15 January 2020

- Second window 1 March 2020 - 31 May 2020

- Third window 1 July 2020 - 31 August 2020 

To enroll, it is necessary to create a personal profile on the platform and pay the enrolment fee as indicated.

Once started, there will a maximum of 3 months time to complete the course. In the case the course it is not completed within the given time, the registration will be cancelled.
